random words / image association

random words

Random words/ image association is an idea generation method which allows us to systematically generate new ideas through a fixed formula. The whole premise is to provoke a reaction from the brain.

According to CreatingMinds.org, there are number of ways to random association!

discover new things around you

random page

1. Discover it

Find a random word can be used as a stimulus for new ideas. The examples are:

  • Take a look around you. What can you see? Can you picture any words in the surrounding? What about things? What else is happening?
  • Choose a random page in a book! You can do this without open your eyes! Run your finger around the page and stop at a page. Then, point your finger on the page and look for a suitable word near your finger.
  • Ask the surrounding people to give you a random word.
  • Select a word from a prepared list of evocative words (fire, child, brick, sausage, etc.)

Good random words are evocative and nothing to do with the existed problem. Ambiguity also helps. Normally, nouns are the best, but verbs and adjectives can also be used effectively.

think vague

2. Find associations

Think about other things about which the word reminds you. Follow associations to see where they go. Think optimistic: associations can be noat clearly understood and having thin consistency (this is all about CREATIVITY, not a test!).

3. Use the associations to create new ideas

Now create new ideas by linking any of the associations with your problem. It can be as vague as you like, besides, what you want is ideas!

If other people give ideas that trigger further ideas from you, then you can go off down that route to see where it goes.

As a variant, you can do stages 2 and 3 together, finding an association and an immediate idea from this.
